(AP) ? A prosecutor grilling a defense expert got the veteran anesthesiologist to acknowledge Monday that Michael Jackson's doctor deviated from the standard of care.

Dr. Paul White was repeatedly questioned about the ways in which Dr. Conrad Murray had broken guidelines and rules in his treatment of Jackson.

White acknowledged that the type of pulse monitor that Murray was using on Jackson's finger was inadequate to properly monitor the singer when the physician left the room.

Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, has acknowledged he was giving Jackson doses of the anesthetic propofol in the singer's bedroom as a sleep aid. He told police that he left Jackson's room for two minutes on June 25, 2009, and returned to find the pop superstar unresponsive.

White told jurors that he would not have given Jackson propofol in the way that Murray had been giving it to Jackson ? outside a clinical setting and in a way that differed from its intended purpose.

The retired anesthesiologist also said he would not leave the room if he were treating a patient who had indicated he liked to inject propofol into himself, as Murray claims that Jackson had told him.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor had to interrupt testimony and admonish White after the researcher repeatedly referenced conversations he had with Murray. The judge has excluded testimony about those discussions.

"Dr. White is trying to offer a response he thinks is helpful," Pastor said of White's comments. At one point Monday, White said he had been told that Jackson had his own stash of propofol beyond the hundreds of the drug that Murray had purchased and shipped to his girlfriend's apartment.

Pastor warned White not to try to bring up the conversations or other excluded information again.

"It's deliberate and I don't like it," Pastor said. "It's not going to happen again."

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren pointedly questioned White, a retired professor and clinical researcher, about the circumstances of Murray's care based on his interview with police two days after Jackson's death. White told jurors last week that he believes all the evidence in the case shows that Jackson must have self-administered propofol when Murray left the room.

Walgren and White noted the unique circumstances of the case.

"Have you ever administered propofol in someone's bedroom?" Walgren asked.

"No, I have not," White replied.

"Have you ever heard of someone doing that prior to this case?" the prosecutor asked.

"No, I have not," White responded.

Later, White said Murray's treatment of Jackson was different from how propofol is supposed to be used ? as an anesthetic used in hospital or clinical settings.

"This was an unusual case because the doctor was trying to allow the patient to achieve a sleep state," White said.

White retired last year after conducting research on propofol before it was approved for use in the United States. He told jurors that he has been paid $11,000 for his work on the case so far.

White's testimony has put him at odds with his colleague and longtime friend, Dr. Steven Shafer, who testified for the prosecutor. Shafer said White's self-administration theory is not supported by the evidence in the case, in his view, and he called the theory "crazy" during his testimony earlier this month.

White and Shafer were colleagues at Stanford University and conducted research on propofol before it was approved for use in U.S. operating rooms in 1989. Both help edit a leading anesthesia journal. Until White's retirement last year, both were practicing anesthesiologists.

Shafer said Murray committed 17 egregious violations of the standard of care and should never have been giving the singer propofol as a sleep aid.

"We are in pharmacological never-never land here, something that was done to Michael Jackson and no one else in history to my knowledge," he told jurors.

Shafer may be called as a rebuttal witness later in the trial, which is now in its sixth week.

Bachmann Cuts Brakeline on the Crazy Train -- Hezbollah Missiles in Cuba (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | There is good reason to believe the reason campaign manager Ed Rollins stepped aside to a distant supervisory position and his assistant David Polyansky stepped away altogether from the Michele Bachmann presidential campaign was that the grade-A steel brakes they were attempting to apply to Bachmann's jawbones were nowhere near strong enough to slow, never mind stop, the Minnesota congresswoman from making crazy comments and ill-advised assertions.

There is little doubt Rollins and Polyansky advised her to dial back on her domestic energy rhetoric after she alienated voters in Florida by stating she would consider "responsible" drilling for oil and natural gas in the Florida Everglades. She didn't. Rollins then said her vaccine remarks were a "mistake."

But now that the two advisers have distanced themselves, Bachmann has reverted to type, making outlandish statements without substantiation. Case in point: She is now saying America should be wary of Hezbollah, the Middle Eastern pro-Iranian terrorist organization, placing missiles in Cuba.

Esquire has reported Bachmann, while on the campaign trail, took exception to normalizing relations with Cuba. She told an audience, "Why would you normalize trading with a country that sponsors terror? There's reports that have come out that Cuba has been working with another terrorist organization called Hezbollah. And Hezbollah is potentially looking at wanting to be part of missile sites in Iran and, of course, when you're 90 miles offshore from Florida, you don't want to entertain the prospect of hosting bases or sites where Hezbollah could have training camps or perhaps have missile sites or weapons sites in Cuba. This would be foolish."

Has Rep. Bachmann started watching Glenn Beck's again, perhaps going online and subscribing to his new two-hour Internet show? Where in the world would she get such an idea that Hezbollah might be operating camps and/or missile sites in Cuba?

As a matter of fact, she most likely got her information from the website, The Blaze , which reported earlier in the month, citing Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, that Hezbollah members had made their way to Cuba to set up operations. The Blaze also noted reports that a House of Representatives committee mentioned Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had had several meetings and that Hezbollah was known to be operating in Latin America.

Still, missiles were not mentioned in the Italian newspaper account.

The Blaze, incidentally, is owned by Glenn Beck.

Does this mean the U.S. and other nations should ignore the reports of the Hezbollah presence? Hardly. But it also does not mean a Minnesota congresswoman should be extrapolating the Second Cuban Missile Crisis (just 11 more months until the 50th anniversary of the first one) from the alleged presence of a group of terrorists on the island.

And it would appear intelligence organizations are tracking the group's movements rather well if a House committee has discussed their presence in Latin America. If not, perhaps reading an Italian newspaper would get them caught up on Hezbollah's daily movements.

But weren't Italian reporters those that broke the story of an informant named "Curveball?" Wasn't he the guy that freely divulged information about there being Weapons of Massive Destruction in Iraq?

Perhaps that is a false correlation, considering that Bachmann simply derived her missiles (read: WMDs) from nothing.

But, then, so did "Curveball." All he needed was an audience.

One day Rollins and Polyansky will admit the actual reasons they stepped away from the Bachmann presidential campaign, and it is likely because they couldn't attach brakes to an unstoppable off-the-rails locomotive.

Palestinian leader: Arabs erred on 1947 partition (AP)

JERUSALEM ? The Palestinian president, in a remarkable assessment delivered on Israeli TV, said Friday the Arab world erred in rejecting the United Nations' 1947 plan to partition Palestine into a Palestinian and a Jewish state.

The Palestinian and Arab refusal to accept a U.N. plan to partition the then-British-controlled mandate of Palestine sparked widespread fighting, then Arab military intervention after Israel declared independence the following year. The Arabs lost the war.

"It was our mistake. It was an Arab mistake as a whole," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told Channel 2 TV in a rare interview to the Israeli media. "But do they (the Israelis) punish us for this mistake 64 years?

Abbas also addressed his negotiations with former Israeli leader Ehud Olmert, now in the spotlight because of the publication of the memoirs of former U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.

Rice backs Israel's account that Olmert made a peace offer that was rejected, while Palestinians say that talks never actually reached a point where a firm offer was on the table.

Abbas claimed that he and Olmert were "very close" to reaching a peace agreement in 2008, before the Israeli leader left office under the cloud of corruption allegations.

"It was a very good opportunity," he said. "If he stayed two, three months, I believe in that time we could have concluded an agreement."

He confirmed Olmert's account that the Israeli leader was prepared to withdraw from 93.5 percent of the West Bank. The Palestinians, Abbas added, responded by offering to let Israel retain 1.9 percent of the West Bank.

In her forthcoming book, "No Higher Honor," excerpted in Newsweek this week, Rice claims that the Palestinians rejected Olmert's proposal.

Rice said Olmert proposed in a May 2008 conversation with her to cede about 94 percent of the West Bank, and to share sovereignty over the disputed holy city of Jerusalem and put an international body in charge of its religious shrines.

In its waning days, Rice wrote, the administration of President George W. Bush tried one last time to wrest a peace deal: "To have an Israeli prime minister on record offering those remarkable elements and a Palestinian president accepting them would have pushed the peace process to a new level. Abbas refused."

In their last meeting before Bush left office in December 2008, "The President took Abbas into the Oval Office alone and appealed to him to reconsider. The Palestinian stood firm, and the idea died," Rice wrote.

On Friday, the chief Palestinian negotiator told The Associated Press that the Palestinians had never rejected the Israeli offer.

With Abbas offering in his counter-proposal to let Israel annex 1.9 percent of the West Bank, Bush set a meeting for Jan. 3, 2009, to lock in the positions, which had been delivered verbally, "so the next administration could begin where we left off," he said.

That meeting was scuttled because of Israel's December 2008 invasion of Gaza, Erekat said, and Olmert was soon out of office. Since that time, talks revived for only a brief three weeks last year.

Last month, Abbas bypassed the troubled negotiations route to ask the U.N. to recognize an independent state of Palestine.

In his interview with Channel 2, Abbas acknowledged the Palestinians might not be able to muster the necessary nine votes in the 15-member Security Council to approve the statehood bid.

But majority support would be a moot point, anyway, because the United States has threatened to veto the statehood petition. Israel also opposes the U.N. bid, arguing, like the U.S., that only negotiations can yield a Palestinian state.

Abbas said "it is difficult ... to launch any kind of negotiations" with the current Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who takes a hawkish stand on territorial concessions.

He said Netanyahu wants to retain an Israeli military presence along the West Bank's eastern border with Jordan for 40 years, even after the establishment of a Palestinian state.

"I told him, I prefer occupation," Abbas said.

Netanyahu has never publicly specified how long he wants to hold on to that territory, known as the Jordan Valley, and his office had no reaction to Abbas' comment.

Why Economic Models Are Always Wrong

Many, many, many people saw the economic collapse.

I was reading plenty of blogs on the housing bubble, housingpanic.com, et etc, describing the preposterousness of "liar loans", subprime this, and idiocy that, and the crazy valuations.

The New York Times even had a plot of the inflation-adjusted Case-Schiller price index which was enormously above any prior peak. During 2006 and 2007 and 2008.

The notion that "nobody" saw it is simply propagandistic truthiness baloney. I personally didn't profit, because I was much too early shorting the mortgage companies & home builders and got stopped out---the bubble was too powerful.

The real crime is that a small number of very powerful people had an exceptionally lucrative interest in NOT stopping it, because they were getting ginormous paychecks from the continuation of the bubble. And now the notion that nobody could see it is used as excuses for the powerful to excuse themselves from responsibility from fraud and crime.

Down in the guts of banks, there were both risk modeling quants in the fancy banks, and the traditional "ladies with a bun" in the retail banks who processed the paperwork who saw how much outright fraud and insanity there was. Their jobs were threatened when they attempted to speak up and stop the madness, because the business side executives were making shitloads of shekels on volume.

Macworld Expo Metamorphosizes Into Macworld|iWorld

macIt wouldn't be right to say that the ever-popular Macworld Expo has been struggling, exactly, but ever since Apple stopped being an official attendee, they have perhaps been struggling for identity. The old de facto Apple conference and expo has become a second-string event, with Apple focusing on retail and much of the ecosystem revolving around software. With this in mind, the expo has decided to dig in and rebrand. First, a change of clothes: "The brand is evolving from Macworld [Expo] to Macworld|iWorld to illustrate that the show is about the whole ecosystem of Apple products," says the expo's general manager, Paul Kent. The pipe and double name are, I'm guessing, a temporary compromise designed to introduce the new name without spooking longtime attendees.

Exxon profit rises 41 percent, shares higher (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Exxon Mobil Corp's profit rose 41 percent in the third quarter, slightly ahead of Wall Street estimates, as gains in crude oil prices and higher refining margins boosted results.

Oil companies around the world benefited in the third quarter from a jump in oil prices. Crude futures traded in New York averaged about $90 per barrel in the third quarter, up 18 percent from a year-ago, and Brent crude rose soared 48 percent.

"Their oil and gas production mix was a tick higher to the gas side than I thought," said Phil Weiss, oil analyst at Argus. "The concern I have is that they are becoming gassier and gassier, which is less lucrative."

Exxon is spending heavily to increase its shale gas production, especially in North America. Last year, it closed a deal for gas producer XTO Energy, and the oil company has steadily been purchasing acreage in shale fields like the Marcellus in the Eastern United States.

In the first nine months of this year, Exxon spent a record $26.7 billion.

The company realized better prices for natural gas in the third quarter, but hefty supplies have kept natural gas markets in North America depressed and trading at a deep discount to crude and natural gas liquids.

Exxon, the world's largest publicly traded oil company, reported a profit of $10.33 billion, or $2.13 per share, up from $7.35 billion, or $1.44 per share a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected a profit of $2.12 per share, according to data from Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Oil and natural gas production fell 4 percent to 4.28 million barrels oil equivalent (boe) per day in the quarter, even as the Irving.

Profit in the company's exploration and production business rose 54 percent to $8.39 billion, while Exxon's refining business saw profit rise 36 percent. Better refining margins increased Exxon's earnings by $1 billion, it said.

Shares of Exxon rose to $82.19 before the start of regular trading, up from a New York Stock Exchange close of $81.07.

Colossal Waste Exposed in Afghan Electric Projects

These are tough times for science and technology journalists, who, if they still have jobs, rarely have the time and travel budgets required for in-depth reporting. But some journalists are still managing to produce tough, labor-intensive, on-the-ground investigations of vitally important topics. One standout is my long-time friend Glenn Zorpette of IEEE Spectrum, the magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Six years ago Glenn traveled to Iraq and came back with a disturbing series, ?Re-engineering Iraq?, on how the U.S. and its allies were wasting billions on efforts to give Iraqis a steady supply of electricity. Zorpette has now followed up that report, a finalist for a National Magazine Award, with an even more alarming investigation of bungled attempts to electrify Afghanistan. Glenn spent three weeks in Afghanistan reporting ?Re-engineering Afghanistan?, published in the October issue of Spectrum. He shows that, at a time when millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet, our government is squandering tens of billions of our tax dollars overseas.

Providing Iraq and Afghanistan with reliable electricity, Zorpette notes, has long been viewed as crucial to the reconstruction of these nations. The goal is to ?stimulate economic activity and create jobs; to make life more comfortable and secure; to give people a more attractive alternative to the typically medieval societies imposed by insurgents. And last, but certainly not least, to win the allegiance of citizens and build their confidence in fledgling government institutions and officials who are all too often bungling or corrupt. Or both.?

Far from learning from its mistakes in Iraq, Zorpette charges, the U.S. is repeating them in Afghanistan. The U.S. has spent an estimated $55 billion on reconstruction in Afghanistan over the past decade, but ?as in Iraq, much of that money has been wasted or badly spent, particularly in the electrical sector.? Zorpette identifies several key problems that have thwarted Afghan electrification projects. The country suffers from a ?crippling deficiency of homegrown engineers,? and the Afghan national electric utility ?is unable to collect enough revenue to sustain its own operations and it has trouble simply keeping records consistently.?

Furthermore, the contracting methodology of U.S. development agencies ?does nothing to discourage overspending and inefficiency.? Zorpette reserves his harshest criticism for USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development, which is ?the dominant development organization in Afghanistan.? Zorpette contends that USAID has ?made major missteps in every significant electrical construction project it has undertaken in the country.?

One such project is a diesel plant built in Tarakhil, a village near Kabul. According to Zorpette, the Bush administration decided to build the plant in 2006 to boost the re-election prospects of President Hamid Karzai. Construction of the plant, by the firm Black & Veatch, cost more than $300 million, and yet since its completion over a year ago the plant ?has hardly been used,? Zorpette notes. ?The main reason is that its diesel fuel must be imported by truck at great cost. This past April the electricity generated at the Tarakhil plant cost around 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to engineers and development specialists interviewed in Afghanistan.?

In comparison, electricity can be piped in from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan at 6 cents per kilowatt-hour. Instead of being impressed by the Tarakhil plant, Afghans started mocking it as ?Karzai?s winter coat.? ?In a war zone,? Zorpette writes, ?the rules of logic sometimes seem suspended. Still, it is hard to understand why anyone thought it was a good idea to build, in a wretchedly poor country, a plant that would consume vast quantities of extraordinarily costly diesel fuel.?

The Tarakhil plant is just one of many boondoggles that Zorpette uncovers. He concludes: ?As a reporter, I have over the years dug up the occasional isolated and carefully concealed incident suggesting incompetence or wrongdoing. But I?ve never reported on anything quite like USAID in Afghanistan, where the examples of ineptitude, poor decisions, and apparent impropriety sometimes seemed to come swarming at me like targets in a video game.? What makes this editorial aside especially poignant is that Zorpette was in favor of the U.S. missions in Afghanistan and Iraq, which he thought would benefit those countries as well as U.S. security.

I don?t know any other journalist with the combination of technical know-how (Zorpette has an electrical engineering degree), writing chops, physical courage and dogged determination needed to produce work such as ?Re-engineering Iraq? and ?Re-engineering Afghanistan.? I hope Zorpette?s articles receive the attention they deserve from the public, government officials and other journalists.

Girlybits 101, now with fewer scary parts!

Edit 11am 10/16: Updated to fix some errors pointed out in the comments. Sorry, guys, blogging at 11pm isn?t ideal for my brain!

I was deeply considering a blog hiatus, dear readers, but sometimes you get hit with sledgehammers, and the only thing you can do to make sense of it all is to blog about it.

To make a long story short, Cat Marnell, the ?Health? and Beauty expert at XO Jane (a website created by Jane Pratt, of Jane and Sassy fame), wrote a blog post or column or whatever about how New York is out of Plan B and this is very distressing to her because she doesn?t believe in birth control and condoms or? something1. It is full of inaccuracies and misconceptions about hormonal birth control, and I am truly disgusted that a woman claiming to be a HEALTH (and beauty) columnist is spreading such filth without checking any of her facts. But I digress. I?m not here to lay the smack down because that?s already been done (and better than I could do) by Skepchick and Scicurious.

No, what has my feathers ruffled is the part where poor Cat got so flustered by her own cycle that she dissolved into a fit of capslocked hysteria.

It makes me sad that (1) a HEALTH (and beauty) columnist refuses to discuss the actual health involved in the topic she?s writing about and (2) this ?OH GOD OUR BODIES ARE WEIRD? attitude isn?t at all uncommon among girls of all ages. It sorta makes me wonder how much of her own basic physiology Cat actually understands. I think I can help out with that.

This post is a quick and simple Girlybits 101, using very small words and no gross or scary diagrams so that the eternally squeamish and uneducated like Cat Marnell can know a little bit more about their bodies without sending themselves into a hormonal frenzy. I know science is hard, dear, but that doesn?t mean you shouldn?t take the time to learn it, especially if part of your job description is to talk to women about their HEALTH (and beauty). However, I have to add a caveat. It is very likely that what I?m about to describe doesn?t exactly fit your experience! The way women experience their cycles is very heavily influenced by their diet, their activity level, their relative amount of stress, their environment, their age, their reproductive status, how much muscle they have, how much fat they have, what types of activities they perform, where they live, etc. etc. etc. In short, a major theme of female reproductive physiology is that nothing is ever the same, not between women and not even within the same woman over time. My blogpal Kate even writes a whole blog on this topic, which I recommend the more intrepid and less-squeamish of you check out immediately for more information. Kate is a much greater expert on all things ladybits than I am, but I know at least enough to give you this quick non-scary overview.

And now, I present to you this Totally Easy And Not At All Gross Explanation of what happens with your girlybits each month, and how birth control and Plan B tie into the equation.

(1)??? You have ovaries, which are a bit like testicles but on the inside. You probably know that ovaries make eggs, but they also make and release endocrines (more commonly known as hormones), which you can think of as messengers. Like letters in the mail. Or text messages, or whatever.

(2)??? Every month, one of your eggs begins to mature. Your egg has a comfy little home inside the ovary that provides it all the things a growing egg needs. However, the ovary knows that one day the egg will have to leave the ovary and venture out into the fallopian tubes, where it might possibly meet a charming young sperm and settle down. The ovary wants to make sure that life is easy for the egg when it leaves, so the ovary makes estrogen (an endocrine).

(3)??? Estrogen travels through the blood and goes all sorts of places doing all sorts of things. One of these jobs is to build a future home for the egg in your uterus.

(4)??? After 14 days or so, the ovary has done all it can do to nurture the egg. Now the egg has to leave the nest and strike out solo. However, this story has a twist. If the egg doesn?t meet a handsome sperm and fall in love within about three days, it will DIE!!! (No pressure.)

(5)??? After the egg has left the ovary to go look for Mr. Right, the ovary continues to make estrogen and also progesterone, which is another endocrine that has a similar job to assist in building the egg?s dream home.

(6)??? At this point, one of two things can happen. The egg can meet Mr. Dreamy Sperm at the Fallopian Club, fuse with him, and move into her Uterine Dream Home, or she will die forever alone.

(7)??? If the egg dies, the ovary eventually stops releasing estrogen and progesterone (it takes a few days because, uhh, the ovary doesn?t have e-mail so it has to wait to get the news of the death through the mail), and a wrecking crew comes by and demolishes the dream home. If the egg fused with Mr. Spermy and becomes a zygote, she starts secreting her own endocrines to communicate with the ovary, telling the ovary what a nice sperm she met and that they?re very happy in their new home. The ovary continues to release estrogen and progesterone so that they have a pleasant stay for 9 months, after which a baby magically appears.

Most forms of hormonal birth control interrupt this cycle so that step 4 never happens. The egg never leaves the ovary, so it never has to choose between marriage or death. Plan B can do the same thing if taken before the egg moves out. If the egg has already moved out, Plan B stops the egg and sperm (collectively called a zygote after they fuse) from moving into the dream home. Unfortunately, Plan B can?t do anything if the egg and sperm have already moved in.

There, that wasn?t so bad, was it? Hopefully some of you are even feeling brave enough to read the more technical version, which I promise is still very easy to understand (however it may include ?scary? words like UTERINE LINING and IMPLANTATION and CORPUS LUTEUM, so, you know, beware or whatever).

(1)??? You have ovaries. Ovaries are your gonads, or the sex organs that produce gametes, also known as eggs and sperm. Since you?re a girl, you?re makin? eggs.

(2)??? The start of your menstrual cycle is the first day of your period. During and after your period, one of your eggs begins to mature inside one of your ovaries. (Contrary to what some people think, ovaries are not like testes in that they are constantly making eggs. Your ovaries are more like fancy storage compartments than anything else. You already have all the eggs you will ever have when you are born. The ovaries store these immature eggs until puberty, after which one egg matures and is released each monthly cycle.) The egg itself is inside a sphere of special protective cells called follicular cells, referred to collectively as the follicle.

(3)??? While the egg is maturing, the follicular cells release estrogen into the bloodstream, which increases vascularization (i.e., it makes more blood vessels) in the uterine wall. More blood vessels means more nutrients for the uterine lining, which may be needed later if you become pregnant.

(4)??? After 14 days or so, the egg is now mature and is released through the wall of the follicle and ovary into the fallopian tubes. This is called ovulation and happens because of a drastic spike in another endocrine made by the ovary called lutenizing hormone. The egg will stay alive for about 3 days, during which time it slowly migrates towards the uterus.

(5)??? The follicle from which the egg was released begins to die. It is now called the corpus luteum, and it releases progesterone in addition to estrogen. Progesterone continues to build up the soft tissue of the uterine lining.

(6)??? If sperm is present in the reproductive tract and fuses with the egg, it becomes a zygote and implants into the wall of the uterus. If sperm is not present, the egg dies.

(7)??? If the zygote implants, it releases another endocrine called human chorionic gonadotropin, which communicates with the corpus luteum back in the ovary and indicates a successful implantation. The corpus luteum stays alive for the duration of the pregnancy and continues to produce helpful endocrines. If the egg dies, the corpus luteum also eventually dies and stops releasing estrogen and progesterone. Eventually, your body realizes that estrogen and progesterone levels have dropped off, and this triggers the start of your period. The uterine lining is shed, and a new egg begins to mature. Go back to step (1) and repeat.

Most forms of birth control contain synthetic estrogen and progesterone or just progesterone. By supplementing your body with these endocrines, you (ideally) stop ovulation from occurring. Plan B has a very very large dose of synthetic progesterone and can do one of several things. It can delay or stop ovulation all together, similar to regular oral birth control, but it can also stop a zygote from implanting by irritating the uterine lining (though this mechanism is under debate; see comment #2). If the zygote has already implanted into the uterine wall, it has no effect.

I used to teach several hundred college sophomores a slightly more technical version of this every quarter.2 If they can understand it, by golly, so can YOU, Cat Marnell! If you have any questions after reading all of that, feel free to give me a call. I would never turn down the opportunity to teach someone about their bodies, as long as they?re willing to stop holding their hands over their ears and yelling ?LALALALALAGIRLYPARTS EWWW GROSSS P.S. SCIENCE IS TOTALLY HARD, YO? long enough to actually learn something.

?

1 I am not judging, by the way. I don?t like condoms or hormonal birth control either. However I do feel the need to qualify that I am not on hormonal birth control because I have health problems that preclude me from being able to take it, not because I think they?ll make me fat. (They won?t.)

2 Without fail, every quarter I would have a male student come up to me after a review session or during office hours and tell me in private that he was very glad he took our class because he had so many questions about female cycles that he was just too darn afraid or embarrassed to ask anyone about. It was adorable and definitely made me feel like I had done something good for the world.

How to Advertise Your Small Business Locally | Make Money Online

This post has been read 156 times.

Local advertising could be the great untapped market for many small businesses. If you operate a freelance operation or an online enterprise, you can still advertise in your local area.

What makes a business grow? It?s clients and repeat business. Through repeat business you can build a reputation that will carry your revenue up and up.

One way to get the word out is through advertising. We know that when you are starting out, money is really important. You want every cent you put into your business to make a difference to your bottom line.

Local Advertising Efforts

Give some thought to advertising in your local area. Even though the Web opens up your business to millions of people worldwide, it won?t make a difference if you can?t reach them.

Advertising locally can help you jump-start your online business and discover a new client base. Here are some ways to make it happen.

* Send out flyers ? It seems a bit ?old school? but it works when done in the right way. Don?t just stuff them into mailboxes. Whenever you attend an event, let other attendees know that you have a business that they may be interested in. Chat them up as you hand over your business material.

* Advertise on your automobile ? Do you have a logo and a tagline? Put them to good use in the community. Have your slogan printed on your back window or on the side door so that anyone can find out your business name and how to contact you. It works better than a billboard and it?s cheaper.

* Use Craigslist ? This is an online advertising tool but it is also a local one. When you look on Craigslist under your home city (or the closest large city), you will find an area where you can place business ads. Millions of people use Craigslist. They can find out about the services you provide and get a bonus when they find out you are right around the corner.

* Create a listing for local guides ? There are plenty of options here. Many churches now distribute congregational guides that list parishioner?s business enterprises. There are also city guides for newcomers to the area and free guides offered in grocery stores that advertise local businesses. People look for bargains in these guides.

* Sponsorships ? Every city has a little league team?or two. Allow your business to sponsor them in exchange for your business name and information on their jerseys. Other local events may be looking for local business sponsors. It is good PR and can also help you identify your niche in the local area.

Are you looking for ways to help your business get to the next level? It doesn?t matter if you run an online enterprise. Consider advertising in your local area to build a new business base.

University of Missouri researchers have found that a drug used to treat high blood pressure and control heart rate as well as to reduce anxiety may help improve language and social function in people with autism.

They are examining the use of drug propranolol to improve the primary traits associated with autism - difficulty with normal social skills, language and repetitive behaviours.

David Beversdorf, associate professor and Thompson Endowed Chair at the MU Thompson Centre for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, found that the drug propranolol is beneficial for improving language development and social communication in people with autism.

"We can clearly say that propranolol has the potential to benefit language and may help people with autism function appropriately in social situations, including making eye contact with others," said Beversdorf.

"Enhancing both language and social function is significant because those are two of the three main features of autism. Clinical trials will assess the drug's effect on all three features, including repetitive behaviours," he added.

Owning Wonderful Finches As Pets | Pets4Noobs Pets Pet ...

Finches as pets are very popular with a lot of people, they look beautiful with their varied colours and patterns and have unique personalities and a cheerful bird song which is lovely to listen to but never too noisy.

Our modern world is getting increasingly busy so it?s great to have a pet that is colourful with personality but also independent and easy to take care of, it is a great benefit. They are content to fly around their cage or aviary happily entertaining themselves.

Due to their natures finches as pets rarely get lonely when left alone for long periods of time, which is ideal for the owners who cannot always be at home. As long as the finches have enough food and drink, and their cages or aviaries are clean with their accessories and materials organised they will be fine.

Because they do not always connect with people when it comes to handling them to clip their toe nails it can take a while to tame them, but with time it can be done. They don?t usually bite but if they do it is not dangerous or painful.

They are very sociable and close with their own groups so it is best to purchase two or more, even as many as six. Getting mostly females is best because having as many males as females gives them more chance to breed frequently, giving you problems with overcrowding.

Finches as pets get on well in their own groups but not always with other species of bird. For example, parakeets or Budgies can be aggressive towards them or even kill them so make sure you keep them separate. even go as far as putting their cages in separate rooms, do not put them next to each other.

The main varieties of finches are the Gouldian finch, the Zebra finch and the Bengalese (Society) finch.

Other finch breeds include the Chinese Grossbeak, the Red Headed Finch and the Cutthroat Finch.

There are also certain Australian varieties such as the Painted Firetail, the Diamond Firetail and the Plum Headed Finch.

Each have certain unique traits, some are louder than others while some are more aggressive than others. Some have certain distinguishing colours and patterns, but all are generally active, hardy and made to fly a lot.

When owning finches as pets the basic things to remember are providing them with enough food and drink regularly, cleaning their cage or aviary regularly, having enough accessories and changing them around often to give the birds variety, a few perches for them to fly to and from and the right materials for the inside.

Most things can be purchased or found at home and there are also many resources available online or at pet stores.

Finches as pets are wonderful, independent, hardy and beautiful birds to own, for the newcomer or experienced bird owner. They come in a wide variety of colours and patterns and have a lovely bird song. They are a great addition to anyone?s home.

Mark Bosworth, Missing Cyclist, May Have Brain Cancer

PORTLAND, Ore ? Nearly two weeks after Mark Bosworth vanished during a seven-day bicycle tour along scenic roads in Oregon, police still have no idea where the 54-year-old cancer survivor went. He left everything behind: clothing, his wallet and credit cards, and his bike.

Relatives are convinced Bosworth is alive, maybe so confused that he has forgotten that his home is in Portland. They suspect a recurrence of lymphoma that may have spread to his brain and caused symptoms of dementia.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 17, the day after Bosworth disappeared, a man wearing similar clothes was seen hitchhiking on a road outside the town of Riddle, where cyclists camped. His wife, Julie, wonders whether he's is trying to get to New York City, where the couple lived for 10 years.

"I can imagine Mark being on I-90, getting by with 40 bucks in his pocket and a stranger's kindness, being confused but strong enough to be on the road," she told The Associated Press.

She hopes that her husband is still alive, maybe catching a ride with someone, maybe walking down some city street, that someone will recognize him, tell him people are looking for him, and that he needs to go home.

As he has in years past, Bosworth this year signed up as a volunteer for Cycle Oregon, an annual bike tour that drew 2,400 riders from around the region and took them on some of the most scenic routes in the state. Although Bosworth was part of the tour's support team, he brought his bike in case he had time to ride.

But days before the start, Bosworth was complaining of headaches.

He brushed them off, saying they were probably caused by muscles he had pulled while working on his bike. His wife wasn't so sure and told him so. He made appointments to see his internist and oncologist, but set them up for after the trip.

During the trip, some had noticed uncharacteristic behavior from Bosworth. He failed to show up for some volunteer shifts, would stare into the distance while standing by himself and had difficulty following signs. When asked if he needed help, he said he was fine.

In a morning telephone conversation with his wife two days before he vanished, Bosworth said Cycle Oregon had surprised everyone by flying cyclists to Ontario, Canada. In a phone call with his wife later that day, he acknowledged it was a strange thing to say and tried to explain it away by saying he must have been having a vivid dream just before they talked earlier in the day.

Julie Bosworth thinks her husband was trying not to deal with the possibility he might be having a cancer relapse until he got back.

Police say it does not appear that Bosworth was a victim of foul play. After talking with Bosworth's doctors and relatives, investigators believe some medical episode is behind Bosworth's disappearance, said Lt. Chris Merrifield, of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

The search continues. Friends, relatives and others have distributed posters from the Canadian border into California and set up a blog, as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts dedicated to getting Bosworth's photo out there and getting him home.

Bosworth is a map expert with Metro, a regional government entity for the greater Portland metropolitan area, as well as an avid cyclist, musician and cook.

Cyclist Greg Bolen spent time with Bosworth several hours before he disappeared.

At a beer garden set up by Cycle Oregon, Bosworth told Bolen he was going to the bathroom while they waited for pizzas, but he didn't return to the table. When Bolen saw him later that day Bosworth said he ran into someone, got to talking and lost track of time.

Bolen last saw Bosworth at about 9:30 on the night of Sept. 16, as they were walking back to the campsite.

Mark and Julie Bosworth were planning to fly to London this weekend to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Instead, she will be continuing to help in the search for her husband.
