Reading the wind and knowing its behavior is a necessary sailor?s skill. Distances in the sea and identifying the direction of travel are also important.

Safety is a sailor?s priority. The basics to safety are floating devices, flares, flashlights and first aid kits. You need to know how to read the waves and anticipate when a big wave is coming your way. Knowing the mechanics of the boat is necessary to steer it.

You need to dress up as well in order to be a complete sailor. As a hobby sailor, you need to wear proper sailing clothing. The weather could be at extremes when at sea and proper clothes will give you protection from it.

To gain protection from the harsh weather, you need to wear waterproof jackets and inshore warm jackets. For footwear, top siders and single mold moods will give you traction from the slippery deck. There are light colored polo shirts on the other hand for friendly weather. Women can wear leggings and men can wear trousers. For extremely bad weather, sailing caps or bonnets, waterproof jackets and life vests are necesary.
