TV's 'Rescue Me' donates 9/11 items to Smithsonian (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Actor Denis Leary is presenting objects from his TV series "Rescue Me" to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History because of the show's connection to New York City firefighters after Sept. 11.

The FX show's co-creator, Peter Tolan, joined Leary for a donation ceremony Thursday. It includes Leary's firefighter costume and tools. The drama is about firefighters dealing with the grief of losing friends and relatives at ground zero.

Leary says they couldn't have created the show without help from New York firefighters to learn their humor and see their work. He says it's an honor to send part of the show to the Smithsonian.

The museum says this is the first in a series of events to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11.
